Why Do I Need Jesus?

Why Do I Need Jesus?

A common question is "Why do I need Jesus?"  The answer is simply one word - Sin.  Every person who has ever lived, other than Jesus Christ, is affected by sin.  The Bible tells us in Romans 3:23, "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God."    Because of our disobedience to God, we are condemned to an eternity separated from Him in a place called Hell.  Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death."  This is not just a physical death, but also a spiritual death.

How Can I Avoid God's Judgement?

The only way we can escape this judgement is through the Gospel.  The word "Gospel" literally means "good news".  The good news is that Jesus came to this earth, lived a perfect, sinless life that we can never live, was crucified and died on a cross, was buried in a tomb, and on the third day rose from the dead.  His willing sacrifice is for the forgiveness of our sins.  Because of what Jesus has done, eternal life is offered as a free gift to all mankind.

How Can I Receive this Gift?

In order to receive this free gift, we must do two things.  First, we must turn from our sins.  The word used in the Bible is "repent".  Acts 3:19 says, "Repent, therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out."  Acts 17:30 says, "He commands all people everywhere to repent."  Matthew 4:17 says, "From that time Jesus began to preach, saying 'Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand'."  Mark 1:15 says, "The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the Gospel."  Therefore, the first thing we must do in order to be saved is turn (repent) from our sins.

The second thing we must do in order to accept the free gift of eternal life is trust in Jesus as Savior.  John 3:16 tells us, "For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."  John 5:24 says, "Truly, truly I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life.  He does not come into judgement but has passed from death to life."  John 6:47 says, " Truly, truly I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life."  Ephesians 2:8 says, "For by grace have you been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God."  Therefore, in order to escape God's eternal judgement, one must turn from their sins and trust in the Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
